Pros
  • Comfortable to hold, because it has the width of a marker pen what makes it really easy to tattoo
  • Silent, no weird noises and it doesn’t vibrate, especially with grip tape
  • When the pen is turned off the needles do retract into the pen
  • It hits quite soft so it suitable for shading and also black and grey type of work
  • Doesn’t heat up and the voltage is consistent 100% of the time
  • You don't have to fine-tune it like a coil machine; it's already done for you
  • Offers the option to ditch the RCA cord and go wireless, making it even more maneuverable
Cons
  • Doesn’t have a ton of power, it goes all the way up to 11 volts, but it starts to struggle after 9 volts and makes a loud noise
  • Anything from 3 to 7 liners works perfectly, but with bigger liners, the machine will start to struggle
  • It is a direct drive machine, so if you press to hard the needles won’t back off and you can damage the skin
  • The needle depth can be always adjusted, but the stroke length or “throw” is set to 3.5 mm

Dragonhawk Mast Tour Review by tattoochronic com

The Dragonhawk Mast Tour Tattoo Machine is a reliable and versatile tool that is suitable for a wide range of tattooing techniques. It is designed with an optimal 3.5 mm stroke length and an adjustable needle depth, providing versatility for creating a wide range of tattoo designs.

The Mast Tour is an affordable machine suitable for both beginners and professionals, with a price point of around $100, and features comparable to more high-end tattoo machines.

In this Mast Tour tattoo pen review, I'll take a closer look at its features, performance, and value for money to help you decide if it's the right machine.

Handling and Maneuverability

One of the standout features of the Mast Tour that I personally love is its lightweight and compact design, which makes it easy to hold and maneuver for long periods.

The Mast Tour is a great choice for tattoo artists who need to work on their feet for hours at a time, as it allows them to maintain control and precision while minimizing fatigue.

Its compact size and ergonomic design make it a great choice for traveling tattoo artists who need a machine that is easy to pack and transport.

Noise Level

The Mast Tour operated quietly in my hands, allowing me to work peacefully without disturbing other clients or anyone else in the studio. This is an important feature for any tattoo artist, as it allows you to focus on your work and deliver high-quality results every time.

Tattoo Techniques

The Mast Tour suits many tattooing techniques, including lining, shading, and packing. The machine's adjustable needle depth and 3.5 mm stroke length (set stroke) provide versatility for creating detailed linework or soft shading, making it a versatile tool for any tattoo artist. However, it is worth noting that the Mast Tour may not be the best choice for working with larger needle groupings or more complex tattoo work, as it may not have enough power for some of the larger tattoos and liners.

Hygiene/Safety

The Mast Tour is designed with hygiene in mind, with no difficult spaces to reach when cleaning. This makes it easy to keep the machine clean and safe to use, ensuring that you can deliver high-quality tattoos to your clients. One of the standout features of the Mast Tour is that the grip can be autoclaved, which is a valuable feature for professionals who need to sterilize their equipment. Autoclaving is a powerful sterilization method used in the medical industry, and the ability to autoclave the Mast Tour's grip ensures that the machine is thoroughly sterilized and ready for use.

Power

The Mast Tour's motor delivers smooth, consistent performance, ensuring that your tattoo lines are always clean and precise. However, it is worth noting that the Mast Tour does not offer much power, and we don't recommend running it above 9 volts. The machine is best suited for smaller tattoos and touch-ups and may not have enough power for larger pieces or more complex tattoo work. Despite this, the Mast Tour's lower power output is not necessarily a drawback for beginners or artists working on smaller tattoos requiring lower voltages.

Warranty

The Dragonhawk Mast Tour Tattoo Machine comes with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty, providing peace of mind and protection for your investment. If you experience any issues with your machine within the first year of ownership, you can contact the manufacturer to have it repaired or replaced. It's worth noting that the terms and conditions of the warranty may vary depending on the specific machine and manufacturer, so it's important to read the documentation carefully and understand what is covered and what is not. Some common exclusions from tattoo machine warranties may include damage caused by improper use or maintenance, modifications or alterations made to the machine, and issues caused by third-party components or accessories.

Price

The Mast Tour is well-priced at around $100, with features comparable to more high-end tattoo machines. If you're willing to spend a few extra dollars, you can purchase a complete wireless tattoo kit that includes everything you need to start tattooing. Overall, the Dragonhawk mast tattoo pen delivers great value for money and is an excellent choice for artists looking for an affordable, high-quality machine.

Summary

In this mast tattoo machine review, I will conclude that the product is a reliable and versatile tool that offers many features and benefits for both beginners and professionals. Its lightweight and compact design makes it easy to handle and maneuver, while its adjustable needle depth and optimal 3.5 mm stroke length provide versatility for creating a wide range of tattoo designs.

Additionally, the machine's hygiene and safety features, such as an autoclavable grip and ease of cleaning, make it a great choice for those concerned with health and safety. Although the Mast Tour tattoo pen may not have enough power for larger tattoos, it is well-priced at around $100, with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty providing added protection and peace of mind.

Overall in my opinion, the Mast Tour is an excellent choice for artists looking for a high-quality, affordable tattoo machine that delivers great value for money.

Dragonhawk Mast Tour Rotary Pen Showcasing

tattoo machine buyers guide

Tattoo machines, also known as tattoo guns, are the fundamental tool of the tattoo artist. They inject ink into the skin, creating the desired tattoo design. With so many options available on the market, it can be overwhelming for a first-time buyer to choose the right machine. This guide will provide an overview of the different types of tattoo machines, factors to consider when buying, and tips for maintenance and care.

Overview of the different types of tattoo machines

Tattoo machines, also known as tattoo guns, come in various types and styles, each with unique characteristics and applications. The main types of tattoo machines are based on their power source: coil and rotary.

Coil Tattoo Machines

Coil tattoo machines use electromagnetic coils to move the needle up and down. They are known for their reliability and durability and have been the standard in the tattoo industry for many years. Traditional tattoo artists typically prefer coil machines suitable for lining, shading, and color packing.

Rotary Tattoo Machines

Rotary tattoo machines use a motor to drive the needle rather than electromagnetic coils. They are known for their precision and quiet operation. Rotary engines are typically preferred by newer tattoo artists and are also suitable for lining, shading, and color packing.

In addition to the power source, tattoo machines can be classified by their function, such as liner machines and shader machines. Liner machines create fine lines and outlining, while shader machines are used for shading and coloring. Some machines are also designed for specific tasks like color packing or certain skin types.

When choosing a tattoo machine, it's important to consider the type of work you will do, your personal preferences, and the brand's reputation. Considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and choose the right machine for your needs.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Tattoo Machine

When buying a tattoo machine, there are several important factors to consider:

  • Quality of Materials: The quality of materials used in the machine will affect its performance and durability. Look for a device made of high-quality materials such as stainless steel or aircraft-grade aluminum.
  • Type of Machine: As mentioned earlier, there are liner and shader machines. Consider the kind of work you will do and choose the device accordingly.
  • Weight and Size: The weight and size of the machine will affect its maneuverability and comfort during long sessions. Consider your comfort level and preferences.
  • Power Source: Coil machines and rotary machines have different power sources. Coil machines are typically preferred by traditional tattoo artists, while newer tattoo artists prefer rotary machines.
  • Brand Reputation: Research the reputation of different brands before making a purchase. Look for reviews from other tattoo artists and read about the company's history and customer service.

Types of Tattoo Machines

There are two main types of tattoo machine motors: coil and rotary. Each has its pros and cons and can be used for different types of work like lining, shading, or color packing, but at the end of the day, it boils down to the artist's preference.

Coil Tattoo Machines

Coil tattoo machines use electromagnetic coils to move the needle up and down. They are known for their reliability and durability and have been the standard in the tattoo industry for many years.

Pros include their reliability and durability, while cons include the fact that they can be heavy and loud.

Rotary Tattoo Machines

Rotary tattoo machines use a motor to drive the needle rather than electromagnetic coils. They are known for their precision and quiet operation.

Pros and Cons of Using a Rotary Machine: Pros include their precision and quiet operation, while cons include the fact that they can be more expensive and require more maintenance.

Different price categories and features

Tattoo machines come in a wide range of prices, from beginner machines to professional-grade devices. As the price increases, so do the features and quality of the machine. Beginner machines may be less expensive, but they may have different durability and performance than professional machines.

Professional versus beginner tattoo machines

Professional tattoo machines are designed for experienced tattoo artists, while beginner machines are designed for those new to the craft. Beginner machines may be less expensive, but they may have different durability and performance than professional machines.

Popular Brands and Models

Some popular brands of tattoo machines include Cheyenne, Ava, Axys Rotary, Dragonhawk, and Inkjecta. Each brand offers a range of models with varying features and prices.

Research the reputation of different brands and models before making a purchase. Look for reviews from other tattoo artists and read about the features and performance of each model. Some brands may have a reputation for high-quality, durable machines, while others may have a reputation for more affordable but less durable machines.

Maintenance and Care

Regular maintenance is crucial for keeping your tattoo machine in good working condition. Pay attention to care for your machine properly to avoid poor performance and even damage to the machine.

Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning a Tattoo Machine:

  • Clean your machine after every use with a disinfectant and dry it thoroughly.
  • Lubricate moving parts with light machine oil to keep them running smoothly.
  • Check for wear and tear on the needle bar and other parts and replace them as needed.
  • Store your machine in a dry, dust-free area.

The importance of hygiene in tattooing

Hygiene is of the utmost importance in the tattooing industry. Not only is it crucial for the health and safety of the clients, but it is also necessary for the well-being of the tattoo artist. Proper hygiene practices can help prevent infectious diseases and other health hazards.

One of the most important aspects of hygiene in tattooing is sterilized equipment. This includes everything from needles and tubes to machines and grips. All equipment must be properly cleaned and disinfected before each use and stored in a clean and dry environment.

Another important aspect of hygiene in tattooing is personal protective equipment or PPE. This includes gloves, masks, and goggles, which help to protect both the client and the tattoo artist from the spread of disease.

Proper hand hygiene is also crucial in the tattooing industry. Tattoo artists must wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after each client and avoid touching their faces or other parts of their bodies while working.

Lastly, maintaining a clean and organized work environment is also important. This includes keeping the tattoo area and surrounding area clean and disposing of waste properly.

All in all, hygiene is a crucial aspect of tattooing. By following proper hygiene practices, tattoo artists can help protect themselves and their clients from spreading infectious diseases and promote a safe and healthy tattooing environment.

In addition to the practical measures mentioned above, it's also important for tattoo artists to stay up-to-date with the latest industry standards and guidelines for hygiene. This includes staying informed about new regulations and policies from organizations such as OSHA, the CDC, and the Association of Professional Tattooists and participating in regular training and education to ensure they know the latest best practices.

Another important aspect of hygiene in tattooing is communication with clients. It's the responsibility of the tattoo artist to ensure that clients understand the importance of proper aftercare and that they're aware of the risks associated with tattooing. This includes providing clear instructions on how to care for the tattoo, warning signs of infection, and when to seek medical attention.

It's also important for tattoo artists to be aware of the risks associated with certain skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and diabetes, and to take extra precautions when working with clients with these conditions.

In conclusion, hygiene is vital in the tattooing industry. Tattoo artists must take the necessary steps to ensure that their equipment is sterilized, that they're using proper PPE, that they're maintaining good hand hygiene, and that their work environment is clean and organized. They should also stay informed about industry standards and guidelines, communicate with clients about proper aftercare, and take extra precautions when working with clients who have certain skin conditions.

What is Autoclaving?

Autoclaving is a process of sterilizing equipment using high-pressure steam. It is a widely used method for sterilizing tattoo equipment, including machines, needles, and tubes. Autoclaving ensures that all equipment is free of harmful bacteria and other pathogens before use.

How to wrap a tattoo machine step by step

Wrapping a tattoo machine is important in maintaining it and ensuring it stays in good working condition. This video teaches about wrapping a machine, specifically the Bishop One shader. You will need a few items to wrap the machine, including barrier film, a wrap for the grip, medical tape, and clip cord sleeves.

First, take the machine apart by removing the grip and setting it aside. Next, please cut one of the clip cord sleeves in half. Now take the wide open spot of the clip cord sleeve, and run it down to the bottom. Line up the center hole and push the machine through. Temporarily put the tip back on the grip and tighten it down.

Now install the battery; you can use a clip cord or a battery; if you're using a battery, you need to cut the clip cord sleeve shorter. Insert the battery, slide the plastic sleeve down, and make a little slit in it to fit the battery. Pull the rest of the way down, and put the barrier film on the machine. Roll the excess on the back and use tape to hold it.

Finally, many people will wrap the grip with sports wrap, but the presenter suggests using barrier film for a more effective barrier. The process may be tricky to work with, but with a little practice, you'll be able to wrap your machine like a pro.

To finish wrapping the machine:

  1. Take a piece of barrier film and wrap it around the grip.
  2. Cover the entire grip, including the edges and the base.
  3. Use a piece of medical tape to secure the barrier film in place. This will provide a barrier between your skin and the grip metal, helping to prevent cross-contamination and keep the grip clean.

When wrapping the machine, it should look neat and professional. The barrier film and medical tape should be securely in place, and the clip cord sleeve should be snug around the machine. Remove the tape and slide the barrier film off if you need to change the battery or make other adjustments to the machine.

Wrapping your tattoo machine is a simple process that can help prolong the life of your machine and keep it in good working condition. Following the steps outlined in this video, you can wrap your machine quickly and easily, ensuring it is ready for your next tattooing session.

Choosing the right tattoo machine for yourself

Choosing the right tattoo machine for you can be a daunting task, as many different types of machines are available on the market. However, considering the following factors, you can narrow down your options and find the machine that best suits your needs and style.

  1. Purpose: Consider the type of tattooing you will be doing most frequently. For example, a rotary machine may be better if you specialize in fine line or portrait work. A coil machine may be better if you prefer to work with traditional or bolder lines.
  2. Weight and Size: Think about how comfortable the machine holds for long periods. Some machines can be quite heavy, which can cause fatigue and discomfort during long tattoo sessions. Pneumatic machines are known for their lightweight design and reduced vibration.
  3. Noise level: Consider the machine's noise level, as some machines can be quite loud. Rotary machines are known for their quiet operation, which can benefit both the tattoo artist and the client.
  4. Maintenance: Different types of machines require different levels of maintenance. Rotary machines, for example, require more maintenance than coil machines. Consider your ability and willingness to maintain your machine and whether you have the resources to do so.
  5. Cost: Tattoo machines can vary greatly in price, and it's important to consider your budget when deciding. Remember that a higher price tag doesn't necessarily mean the machine is of better quality, so research and read reviews before making a purchase.

Ultimately, it is important to try out different machines and see which one feels most comfortable and natural for you to use. It is also helpful to ask other tattoo artists for their recommendations and experiences with different machines.

Summary

Choosing the right tattoo machine is an important decision that can affect the quality of your work and the comfort of your clients. You can make an informed decision when purchasing a machine by considering the factors outlined in this guide, such as the quality of materials, type of machine, power source, and brand reputation. Additionally, regular maintenance and care will help ensure your machine stays in good working condition for years to come. Remember to always sterilize your equipment before use and make sure to use it in a safe and hygienic environment.

Yes, it can be used for permanent makeup as well.

Is this recommended for beginners?

We would definitely recommend this for a beginner, very lightweight and easy to use. Perfect for smaller tattoos and beginner stuff like fake skin.

Pen came with a small ziploc with two small rubber bands. What are they exactly for?

If you keep twisting the pen it will unscrew and pull out. Those rubber bands are just extras in case the current ones get used up.

Are mast tattoo machines good

Mast tattoo machines are generally considered to be good quality machines by many professional tattoo artists. Mast is a relatively new brand in the tattoo industry, but it has gained a good reputation for producing high-quality machines that are both reliable and efficient.

I understand the machine rotates to change needle length but how do I know what length I need exactly?

You don’t. You can start by having the needle hang out just a little and then twist clockwise from there. You just have to look at the needle hanging from the tip and get a feel for it.

Has anyone used this to tattoo identification numbers on animals?

There are special machines for that. This is too abrasive

What should I do if the ink leaks?

Check the cartridge, often it may be the case that the cartridge is cracked.

How do you use the transfer paper with the kit?

You draw your design on the top paper. This paper sits on top of a carbon black paper. The image will be transferred onto the back of the paper you drew your design. This will be the side that is applied to your skin. Cut out the design without leaving big edges. Put some Stencil Stuff or men's Speedstick onto the service you want to tattoo and let dry until it’s sticky but not too wet. Apply your image with the original image facing up and the transferred image facing down. Carefully press on the image with a paper towel. Lift up the paper and your design will be transferred. Take a paper towel and press it on top one more time to get up excess ink. Let the image dry for a bit before tattooing. On fake skin, I’ll wait overnight
